I recall being in positions where individuals were hired or promoted into roles with very little—or sometimes no—skills to effectively perform the responsibilities of the job. While promotions and new hires are often made with good intentions, placing someone into a role without ensuring they are equipped to succeed can quickly lead to frustration, disengagement, and underperformance.
When employees are placed into positions with limited skills or inadequate preparation, it becomes vital for managers to provide the tools, training, and support necessary for success. Without this support, leaders unintentionally set employees up for failure—impacting not only the individual but also the organization’s competitive edge and overall performance.
This is why collaboration between recruiters and managers is critical. Recruiting should not be about simply filling a role; it should be about matching talent to the right position. Recruiters and hiring managers must work together to clearly define role expectations, required competencies, and growth potential before making hiring or promotion decisions.
In my experience as a recruiter, I made it a priority to communicate deeply with candidates—learning about their passions, strengths, and professional niche. By doing so, I was able to place individuals into roles where they could truly thrive. Many of those candidates not only performed well but went on to grow and advance within their organizations.
When employees are aligned with roles that match their skills and interests, everyone wins.
* Employees feel confident and valued,
* leaders see stronger performance, and
* organizations benefit from higher productivity, engagement, and retention.
Effective leadership isn’t about filling positions quickly—it’s about placing people thoughtfully. When organizations commit to developing their people and aligning talent with purpose, they create a foundation for long-term success.
